In 2022, the amount of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) exported from India fell to X tons, with a decrease of -4.8% against the year before. In general, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 163% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paper and paperboard exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 201%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ethiopia (X tons) was the main destination for paper and paperboard exports from India, accounting for a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, paper and paperboard exports to Ethiopia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Djibouti (X tons), with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Ethiopia totaled +151.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+25.5% per year) and Djibouti (-5.0% per year).

In value terms, Ethiopia ($X) remains the key foreign market for paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) exports from India, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Ethiopia totaled +144.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+27.4% per year) and the UK (-8.8% per year).

In 2022, the average paper and paperboard export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 43% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Imports into India

In 2022, paper and paperboard imports into India reduced markedly to X tons, shrinking by -33.3% against the previous year's figure. Overall, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +29.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard import price increased by +119.6% against 2016 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
