In 2021, the Indian direct dye market decreased by -28.6% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, consumption showed a perceptible downturn. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, direct dye production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Direct dye production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, exports of direct dyes and preparations based thereon from India soared to X tons, surging by 18% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +126.5% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, direct dye exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +19.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 37%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of direct dye exports from India, together comprising 37% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +76.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for direct dye exported from India were the Netherlands ($X), Italy ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 33% of total exports. These countries were followed by Poland, Japan, the United States, Mexico, Indonesia, Spain, Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 46%.

Among the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +62.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average direct dye export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 4.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of direct dyes and preparations based thereon increased by 39% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, direct dye imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Thailand (X tons) constituted the largest direct dye supplier to India, with a 31% share of total imports. Moreover, direct dye imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Thailand totaled +45.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-21.8% per year) and Germany (-29.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest direct dye suppliers to India were Thailand ($X), Germany ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 42% share of total imports. The United States, Italy, Vietnam, South Korea, Indonesia, Spain and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +64.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average direct dye import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -2% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
