In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Indian dry bean market, when its value decreased by -0.4% to $X. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +12.7% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Dry Bean Production in India
In value terms, dry bean production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, posted measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 63%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
In 2022, the average dry bean yield in India dropped to X kg per ha, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the average dry bean yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The dry bean harvested area in India shrank to X ha in 2022, with a decrease of -5.3% compared with the previous year. Overall, the total harvested area indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, dry bean harvested area increased by +8.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 38%. The dry bean harvested area peaked at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Dry Bean Exports
Exports from India
After ten years of growth, overseas shipments of beans (dry) decreased by -38.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 123% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, dry bean exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 116%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Nepal (X tons), China (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of dry bean exports from India, together accounting for 59% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nepal (with a CAGR of +171.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Nepal ($X) and China ($X) constituted the largest markets for dry bean exported from India worldwide, together accounting for 54% of total exports.
China, with a CAGR of +144.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average dry bean export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 9.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 24%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Dry Bean Imports
Imports into India
In 2022, approx. X tons of beans (dry) were imported into India; which is down by -16% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 65%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell notably in the following year.
In value terms, dry bean imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 86%. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Myanmar (X tons) constituted the largest dry bean supplier to India, with a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, dry bean imports from Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Madagascar (X tons), with a 2.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Myanmar was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+16.4% per year) and Madagascar (+5.9% per year).
In value terms, Myanmar ($X) constituted the largest supplier of beans (dry) to India, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Myanmar amounted to +1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+23.9% per year) and Madagascar (+9.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average dry bean import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, dry bean import price increased by +48.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
