Hazelnut Market Size in India

The Indian hazelnut market dropped to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -10.8% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +36.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 47%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of hazelnuts decreased by -78.1% to X kg, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a sharp contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 655%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut exports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 477%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Tanzania (X kg) was the main destination for hazelnut exports from India, accounting for a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, hazelnut exports to Tanzania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Oman (X kg), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Malaysia (X kg), with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Tanzania totaled +13.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (-51.7% per year) and Malaysia (-35.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for hazelnut exported from India were Tanzania ($X), Oman ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together accounting for 81% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +2.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average hazelnut export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -14.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 148%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Qatar (+33.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of hazelnuts increased by 33% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after five years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 539% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 351%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest hazelnut supplier to India, with a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, hazelnut imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X kg), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States stood at -2.3%.

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hazelnut to India, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the United States amounted to -5.2%.

Import Prices by Country

The average hazelnut import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 52% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild setback. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for the United States totaled $X per ton.
