In 2022, the Indian headphone market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 421% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, headphone exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 367% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X units), Hong Kong SAR (X units) and Bhutan (X units) were the main destinations of headphone exports from India, with a combined 82% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Bhutan (with a CAGR of +196.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for headphones exports from India, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 9.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United Arab Emirates amounted to +30.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+91.9% per year) and the UK (+104.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average headphone export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -8.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 74% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Bhutan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+42.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into India
After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of headphones increased by 37% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, headphone imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a resilient expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Hong Kong SAR (X units) constituted the largest supplier of headphone to India, with a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, headphone imports from Hong Kong SAR exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Vietnam (X units), with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Hong Kong SAR amounted to +17.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-4.7% per year) and Vietnam (-19.5% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of headphones to India, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +9.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+8.0% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+30.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average headphone import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 32% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 106%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while the price for Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+34.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
