Qatar (X tons) was the main destination for hemp tow exports from India, accounting for a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, hemp tow exports to Qatar exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X kg), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Jordan (X kg), with a 3.4% share.

For the fourth year in a row, India recorded growth in purchases abroad of hemp tow, which increased by 150% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 1,350% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, hemp tow imports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 483%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, France (X tons) constituted the largest hemp tow supplier to India, accounting for a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, hemp tow imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Lithuania (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belgium (X tons), with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France amounted to +95.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (0.0% per year) and Belgium (+331.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest hemp tow suppliers to India were France ($X), Belgium ($X) and China ($X), together accounting for 77% of total imports.
