After two years of growth, the Indian millet market decreased by -0.3% to $X in 2022. In value terms, millet exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +28.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Nepal (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) were the main destinations of millet exports from India, together comprising 57% of total exports. Libya, Oman, Yemen, Morocco, Tunisia, Bangladesh, Qatar, Algeria, Bahrain and Kuwait lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +654.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Nepal ($X) were the largest markets for millet exported from India worldwide, with a combined 51% share of total exports. In terms of the main countries of destination, Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +705.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average millet export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bangladesh (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of millet were imported into India; growing by 22% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 135%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
