Soft Drink Market Size in India

In 2021, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in the Indian soft drink market, when its value decreased by -6.7% to $X. In general, consumption, however, posted prominent growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 18%. In 2021, exports of soft drinks from India skyrocketed to X litres, with an increase of 143% against the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The United States (X litres) was the main destination for soft drink exports from India, with a 31% share of total exports. Moreover, soft drink exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Somalia (X litres), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Nepal (X litres), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States amounted to +18.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Somalia (+164.7% per year) and Nepal (+11.4% per year).

In value terms, Djibouti ($X), the United States ($X) and Nepal ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for soft drink exported from India worldwide, together comprising 50% of total exports. These countries were followed by Bhutan, Australia, Canada, Somalia, the UK, Singapore, Maldives, the United Arab Emirates, Angola and New Zealand, which together accounted for a further 39%.

Among the main countries of destination, Somalia, with a CAGR of +129.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average soft drink export price amounted to $X per litre, with a decrease of -9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, soft drink export price decreased by -23.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Djibouti ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Somalia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Angola (+25.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into India

In 2021, approx. X litres of soft drinks were imported into India; jumping by 72% against the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, soft drink imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nepal (X litres), Bangladesh (X litres) and the Netherlands (X litres) were the main suppliers of soft drink imports to India, together comprising 67% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Hungary and Austria, which together accounted for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Sri Lanka (with a CAGR of +302.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest soft drink suppliers to India were Nepal ($X), Bangladesh ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 59% of total imports. Germany, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Hungary and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +273.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average soft drink import price amounted to $X per litre, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per litre), while the price for Bhutan ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+10.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
