The Indian organic surface active agent market contracted modestly to $X in 2021, reducing by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a mild contraction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +89.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, organic surface active agent exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +96.1% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Bangladesh (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of organic surface active agent exports from India, with a combined 29% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Sri Lanka, Brazil, Turkey, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Russia, South Africa and Egypt, which together accounted for a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +38.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X), the United States ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for organic surface active agent exported from India worldwide, together comprising 29% of total exports. Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Egypt, Russia, Vietnam, South Africa and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Russia, with a CAGR of +42.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average organic surface active agent export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 18%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Organic Surface Active Agents

Imports into India

In 2021, approx. X tons of organic surface active agents were imported into India; growing by 31% compared with the year before. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, organic surface active agent imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +65.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 52%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of organic surface active agent to India, with a 30% share of total imports. Moreover, organic surface active agent imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X tons), threefold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +17.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (-6.6% per year) and the United States (+12.9% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), the United States ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the largest organic surface active agent suppliers to India, together comprising 49% of total imports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Thailand, Belgium, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Indonesia and Qatar, which together accounted for a further 35%.

Qatar, with a CAGR of +64.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average organic surface active agent import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
