Papaya Market Size in India

In 2022, the Indian papaya market increased by 0.5% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Papaya consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Papaya Production in India

In value terms, papaya production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +9.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average papaya yield in India expanded slightly to X tons per ha, growing by 3.6% on the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average papaya yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The papaya harvested area in India fell to X ha in 2022, leveling off at 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The papaya harvested area peaked at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of papayas, when their volume increased by 30% to X tons. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, papaya exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 36%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nepal (X tons) was the main destination for papaya exports from India, with a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, papaya exports to Nepal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Qatar (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Nepal stood at +14.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (+10.8% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-20.1% per year).

In value terms, Nepal ($X), Qatar ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for papaya exported from India worldwide, with a combined 79% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Nepal, with a CAGR of +15.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average papaya export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 2.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 50%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Papaya Imports

Imports into India

In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of papayas, when their volume decreased by -5.5% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 305%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, papaya imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 298% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Thailand (X tons) was the main supplier of papaya to India, with a 99% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil (X kg), with a 0.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Thailand totaled +49.3%.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of papayas to India, comprising 100% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 0.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Thailand amounted to +57.6%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average papaya import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 46%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil totaled $X per ton.
