In 2021, the Indian phosphorus, arsenic and selenium market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, the total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

After three years of decline, shipments abroad of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium increased by 35% to X tons in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, faced a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 92%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the main destinations of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports from India, together comprising 42% of total exports. Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines, Israel, South Africa, Argentina, Bangladesh, Mexico, Hungary and Peru lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +290.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exported from India were the United States ($X), Chile ($X) and Brazil ($X), with a combined 36% share of total exports. The Philippines, Russia, Argentina, South Africa, Mexico, Indonesia, Israel, Peru, Hungary and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

Argentina, with a CAGR of +177.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average phosphorus, arsenic and selenium export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, faced a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 42%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into India

In 2021, the amount of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imported into India skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 36% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports showed a strong increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Vietnam (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium to India, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Vietnam totaled +13.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+126.3% per year) and China (-16.9% per year).

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constituted the largest supplier of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium to India, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Vietnam amounted to +13.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+92.6% per year) and China (-23.6% per year).

The average phosphorus, arsenic and selenium import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
