The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, pigeon peas exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1,369% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The United States (X tons), Nepal (X tons) and Canada (X tons) were the main destinations of pigeon peas exports from India, with a combined 66% share of total exports. Malaysia, Singapore, Qatar, the UK, the United Arab Emirates, Australia and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

From 2013 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States amounted to +84.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nepal (+97.7% per year) and Canada (+103.6% per year).

Pigeon peas imports into India soared to X tons in 2021, jumping by 50% on 2020 figures. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2013 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last eight years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
Mozambique (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Sudan (X tons) were the main suppliers of pigeon peas imports to India, together accounting for 84% of total imports. These countries were followed by Malawi, Myanmar and the United Arab Emirates, which together accounted for a further 14%.
From 2013 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +60.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mozambique ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Sudan ($X) were the largest pigeon peas suppliers to India, with a combined 85% share of total imports. Malawi, Myanmar and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.
Among the main suppliers, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +56.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average pigeon peas import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a temperate increase from 2013 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last eight-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, pigeon peas import price increased by +72.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 42% against the previous year.
