In 2022, the Indian primary cell and battery market increased by 42% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a slight setback. Primary cell and battery consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, primary cell and battery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 121% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Nepal (X units) was the main destination for primary cell and battery exports from India, accounting for a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, primary cell and battery exports to Nepal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Tanzania (X units), with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Nepal stood at +19.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+46.7% per year) and Tanzania (-4.3% per year).
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the key foreign market for primary cells and batteries exports from India, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Nepal, with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United Arab Emirates amounted to +42.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+32.4% per year) and Nepal (+7.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average primary cell and battery export price amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 50% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 57%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Tanzania (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (+35.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into India
In 2022, purchases abroad of primary cells and batteries increased by 44% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +136.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, primary cell and battery imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 71%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Japan (X units) constituted the largest supplier of primary cell and battery to India, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, primary cell and battery imports from Japan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X units), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by China (X units), with a 9.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Japan totaled +26.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+22.0% per year) and China (-13.5% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of primary cells and batteries to India, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 6.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to -14.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+12.8% per year) and Japan (-4.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average primary cell and battery import price amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -20.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price faced a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 47%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while the price for Japan (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+14.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
