Coniferous Roundwood Market Size in India

The Indian coniferous roundwood market dropped to $X in 2022, which is down by -9.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a tangible increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood production shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -12.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of roundwood (coniferous) was finally on the rise to reach X cubic meters after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 181% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 152%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Maldives (X cubic meters), Qatar (X cubic meters) and Mauritius (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of coniferous roundwood exports from India, with a combined 83% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Maldives (with a CAGR of +69.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for coniferous roundwood exported from India were Qatar ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Maldives ($X), with a combined 86% share of total exports.

Maldives, with a CAGR of +79.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average coniferous roundwood export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, growing by 2.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mauritius (+30.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Coniferous Roundwood Imports

Imports into India

In 2022, approx. X cubic meters of roundwood (coniferous) were imported into India; with a decrease of -24.9% against 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 1,784% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 1,327% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Uruguay (X cubic meters) constituted the largest coniferous roundwood supplier to India, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, coniferous roundwood imports from Uruguay exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Australia (X cubic meters), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (X cubic meters), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Uruguay totaled +103.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (+177.0% per year) and the United States (+68.2% per year).

In value terms, Uruguay ($X) constituted the largest supplier of roundwood (coniferous) to India, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Uruguay stood at +102.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (+197.1% per year) and the United States (+77.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average coniferous roundwood import price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, jumping by 36% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coniferous roundwood import price increased by +129.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 37% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Singapore ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
