The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to sesame seed production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from India
In 2022, overseas shipments of sesame seed decreased by -9.9% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sesame seed exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 29%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Korea (X tons) was the main destination for sesame seed exports from India, accounting for a 18% share of total exports. Moreover, sesame seed exports to South Korea exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), threefold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Korea was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-4.8% per year) and China (+16.7% per year).
In value terms, South Korea ($X) remains the key foreign market for sesame seed exports from India, comprising 16% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 6.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to South Korea was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-2.8% per year) and Russia (+7.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average sesame seed export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to the United States ($X per ton) and Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into India
In 2022, supplies from abroad of sesame seed decreased by -5.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 670% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sesame seed imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 853% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Sudan (X tons) constituted the largest sesame seed supplier to India, accounting for a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, sesame seed imports from Sudan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), sixfold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Sudan stood at +43.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+46.4% per year) and the United States (+18.7% per year).
In value terms, Sudan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sesame seed to India, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Sudan stood at +40.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+60.9% per year) and the United States (+22.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average sesame seed import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sesame seed import price increased by +21.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
