In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of sweet potatoes, when their volume decreased by -7.7% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, recorded notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 92%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, sweet potato exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
Nepal (X tons) was the main destination for sweet potato exports from India, accounting for a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, sweet potato exports to Nepal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Maldives (X tons), with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Nepal totaled +35.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+171.2% per year) and Maldives (+23.4% per year).
In value terms, Nepal ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Maldives ($X) were the largest markets for sweet potato exported from India worldwide, with a combined 55% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Canada, Qatar, Belgium and Bhutan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
Among the main countries of destination, Belgium, with a CAGR of +162.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average sweet potato export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 53% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
