Sportswear Market Size in India

In 2021, the Indian sportswear market decreased by -11.5% to $X for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate significant growth. Sportswear consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Sportswear Production in India

In value terms, sportswear production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports from India

In 2021, sportswear exports from India soared to X units, rising by 106% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sportswear exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Italy (X units), Tanzania (X units) and the United States (X units) were the main destinations of sportswear exports from India, with a combined 48% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, France, the UK, Nepal, Poland and Qatar, which together accounted for a further 39%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +138.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for track suits, ski suits and swimwear exports from India, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with an 8.9% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Italy totaled +14.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+85.2% per year) and the United States (-21.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average sportswear export price amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into India

In 2021, purchases abroad of track suits, ski suits and swimwear decreased by -32.5% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after eight years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 123%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sportswear imports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 69% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of sportswear to India, accounting for a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, sportswear imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sri Lanka (X units), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Vietnam (X units), with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +18.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (+45.7% per year) and Vietnam (+51.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of track suits, ski suits and swimwear to India, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +9.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+51.7% per year) and Sri Lanka (+34.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average sportswear import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 48% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while the price for Myanmar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
