In 2022, shipments abroad of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages increased by 30% to X litres, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 224% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 220%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X litres) was the main destination for exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages from India, accounting for a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (X litres), threefold. Nigeria (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United Arab Emirates totaled +23.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+35.4% per year) and Nigeria (+24.3% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages exports from India, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United Arab Emirates totaled +21.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+15.5% per year) and the Netherlands (-14.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages stood at $X per litre in 2022, with a decrease of -28.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 80%. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into India

In 2022, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages into India soared to X litres, surging by 69% on the previous year. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +112.1% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages surged to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +116.4% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the UK (X litres) constituted the largest spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages supplier to India, with a 66% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sweden (X litres), sixfold. France (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the UK stood at +4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (+53.6% per year) and France (+20.4% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages to India, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Sweden, with an 8.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the UK totaled +1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+14.8% per year) and Sweden (+43.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages amounted to $X per litre, dropping by -9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per litre), while the price for Sweden ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
