In 2021, the Indian walnut market increased by 18% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption saw a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Walnut Production in India

In value terms, walnut production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 142%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the average walnut yield in India reached X tons per ha, leveling off at 2020 figures. In general, the yield, however, showed a noticeable reduction. In value terms, walnut exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Spain (X tons), Iran (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main destinations of walnut exports from India, together comprising 76% of total exports. Turkey, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Nepal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +189.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for walnut exported from India were Spain ($X), Iran ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 70% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Bahrain and Nepal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +228.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average walnut export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -30% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 113% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of walnuts increased by 65% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 944% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, walnut imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 843% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Chile (X tons), the United States (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main suppliers of walnut imports to India, together comprising 99% of total imports.
