For the third consecutive year, the Indian wheat gluten market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 39% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption posted a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In 2022, shipments abroad of wheat gluten decreased by -78.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports showed a abrupt curtailment. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Canada (X tons), Nepal (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) were the main destinations of wheat gluten exports from India, together accounting for 70% of total exports. The United States, Kenya, Australia and Bhutan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bhutan (with a CAGR of +86.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and Nepal ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for wheat gluten exported from India worldwide, together accounting for 67% of total exports. Kenya, Bhutan, the United States and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
Bhutan, with a CAGR of +104.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average wheat gluten export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 212% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 249%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sri Lanka (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into India
In 2022, imports of wheat gluten into India totaled X tons, increasing by 7.8% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 134% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, wheat gluten imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 154% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest wheat gluten supplier to India, accounting for a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, wheat gluten imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Iran (X tons), fivefold. Russia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +7.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (+139.0% per year) and Russia (-11.1% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wheat gluten to India, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iran ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +13.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (+149.9% per year) and Russia (+14.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average wheat gluten import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 29% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.0%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Lithuania ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and Iran ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+32.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
