In 2021, overseas shipments of preservative-treated rough wood were finally on the rise to reach X cubic meters for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 99%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preservative-treated rough wood exports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nepal (X cubic meters) was the main destination for preservative-treated rough wood exports from India, accounting for a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, preservative-treated rough wood exports to Nepal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Oman (X cubic meters), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Nepal stood at +38.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (+3.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+10.3% per year).

In value terms, Nepal ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for preservative-treated rough wood exports from India, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Nepal stood at +149.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+13.6% per year) and Oman (-25.4% per year).

In 2021, the average preservative-treated rough wood export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, reducing by -9.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 150% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into India

In 2021, approx. X cubic meters of preservative-treated rough wood were imported into India; with an increase of 123% compared with 2020. Overall, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preservative-treated rough wood imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a buoyant expansion. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria (X cubic meters), Malaysia (X cubic meters) and the United States (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of preservative-treated rough wood imports to India, with a combined 65% share of total imports. South Africa, Belgium, Brazil, the UK and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +138.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of preservative-treated rough wood to India, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Malaysia amounted to +46.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+68.7% per year) and South Africa (+91.9% per year).

In general, the import price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 43%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Nigeria ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
