Aluminum Market Size in Indonesia
In 2021, the Indonesian aluminum market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. Aluminum consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Aluminum Production in Indonesia
In value terms, aluminum production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
Aluminum Exports
Exports from Indonesia
In 2021, the amount of aluminum exported from Indonesia contracted notably to X tons, waning by -27.7% against the previous year. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 135% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, aluminum exports rose notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 126%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for aluminum exports from Indonesia, with a 40% share of total exports. Moreover, aluminum exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vietnam (X tons), twofold. Japan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to China totaled +79.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+91.5% per year) and Japan (-19.6% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Japan ($X) constituted the largest markets for aluminum exported from Indonesia worldwide, together comprising 75% of total exports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +92.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average aluminum export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 53% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were Vietnam ($X per ton) and the Philippines ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Aluminum Imports
Imports into Indonesia
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of aluminum, when their volume increased by 42% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep contraction. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, aluminum imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main suppliers of aluminum imports to Indonesia, together comprising 51% of total imports. These countries were followed by India, Russia, South Korea, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, South Africa, Switzerland, Taiwan (Chinese) and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 40%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Switzerland (with a CAGR of +29.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Australia ($X) constituted the largest aluminum suppliers to Indonesia, together accounting for 50% of total imports. India, Russia, South Korea, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, South Africa, Switzerland, Taiwan (Chinese) and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.
Switzerland, with a CAGR of +31.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average aluminum import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 41% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices from Singapore ($X per ton) and Bahrain ($X per ton), while the price for Oman ($X per ton) and the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
