Areca Nut Market Size in Indonesia

In 2022, the Indonesian areca nut market decreased by -67.3% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption saw a sharp decline. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, areca nut exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +15.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 59%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Thailand (X tons), Pakistan (X tons) and Iran (X tons) were the main destinations of areca nut exports from Indonesia, together accounting for 75% of total exports. India, Bangladesh, China, Singapore and Nepal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +38.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for areca nut exported from Indonesia were Pakistan ($X), Thailand ($X) and Iran ($X), with a combined 78% share of total exports. India, Bangladesh, China, Singapore and Nepal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

China, with a CAGR of +49.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average areca nut export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, areca nut export price increased by +43.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 40% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Indonesia

In 2022, the amount of areca nuts imported into Indonesia expanded slightly to X tons, surging by 3.8% on the year before. Overall, imports recorded a moderate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 246% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, areca nut imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 592%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Myanmar (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X kg) were the main suppliers of areca nut imports to Indonesia, with a combined 84% share of total imports. Thailand, Singapore and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +55.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
