The Indonesian baby garment market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after three years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 43%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Baby garment exports from Indonesia dropped dramatically to X units in 2022, waning by -48% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, baby garment exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 51%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The United States (X units) was the main destination for baby garment exports from Indonesia, with a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, baby garment exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X units), fivefold. Canada (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States amounted to -3.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+3.8% per year) and Canada (+15.9% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for babies’ garments and clothing accessories (knitted or crocheted) exports from Indonesia, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 6.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States stood at +3.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+11.4% per year) and Canada (+23.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average baby garment export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, baby garment export price increased by +37.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+18.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Baby Garment Imports
Imports into Indonesia
In 2022, imports of babies’ garments and clothing accessories (knitted or crocheted) into Indonesia reduced dramatically to X units, waning by -87.5% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports faced a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 59% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
In value terms, baby garment imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 51%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X units), Bangladesh (X units) and India (X units) were the main suppliers of baby garment imports to Indonesia, together comprising 79% of total imports. Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +17.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest baby garment suppliers to Indonesia were China ($X), Bangladesh ($X) and India ($X), together accounting for 74% of total imports. Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.
Among the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +15.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average baby garment import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 37% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, baby garment import price increased by +43.7% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while the price for South Korea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+14.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
