Banana And Plantain Market Size in Indonesia

In 2022, the Indonesian banana and plantain market decreased by -0.3% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average banana and plantain yield in Indonesia declined to X tons per ha, falling by -12.2% on 2021 figures. Overall, the yield saw a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the yield increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average banana and plantain yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of bananas and plantains were harvested in Indonesia; picking up by 10% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the total harvested area indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, banana and plantain harvested area decreased by -8.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to banana and plantain production reached the maximum at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Indonesia

Banana and plantain exports from Indonesia contracted notably to X tons in 2022, waning by -35.9% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 363%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, banana and plantain exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 444%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malaysia (X tons) was the main destination for banana and plantain exports from Indonesia, with a 36% share of total exports. Moreover, banana and plantain exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), twofold. Singapore (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Malaysia totaled +52.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+3.0% per year) and Singapore (+78.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for banana and plantain exported from Indonesia were Malaysia ($X), China ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 59% share of total exports. Japan, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Japan, with a CAGR of +109.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average banana and plantain export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 61% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Oman (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Indonesia

In 2022, purchases abroad of bananas and plantains increased by 89% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 925% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, banana and plantain imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a sharp contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 306%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Singapore (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of banana and plantain imports to Indonesia, with a combined 85% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +842.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest banana and plantain suppliers to Indonesia were France ($X), Thailand ($X) and Singapore ($X), together comprising 61% of total imports.

France, with a CAGR of +712.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average banana and plantain import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -39.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 195%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+14.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
