Banana Market Size in Indonesia

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Indonesian banana market, when its value decreased by -1.9% to $X. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Banana Production in Indonesia

In value terms, banana production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 9.4% against the previous year. Banana production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of bananas in Indonesia reduced to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -12.2% compared with the year before. In general, the yield continues to indicate a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the yield increased by 29%. The banana yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports from Indonesia

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of bananas, when their volume increased by 117% to X tons. In general, exports recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 901%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, banana exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 754%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

China (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Oman (X tons) were the main destinations of banana exports from Indonesia, with a combined 66% share of total exports. Singapore, Qatar, South Korea, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Korea (with a CAGR of +183.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Japan ($X) and Singapore ($X) were the largest markets for banana exported from Indonesia worldwide, with a combined 68% share of total exports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Oman (-7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Indonesia

In 2022, overseas purchases of bananas increased by 3.7% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, faced a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 299% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, banana imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 239% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main suppliers of banana imports to Indonesia, together comprising 99% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +19.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest banana suppliers to Indonesia were Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 88% share of total imports.
