Basic Dye Market Size in Indonesia

After two years of growth, the Indonesian basic dye market decreased by -0.7% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Basic Dye Production in Indonesia

In value terms, basic dye production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -1.7% against 2019 indices. In 2021, overseas shipments of basic dyes and preparations based thereon were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 77% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, basic dye exports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 93%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for basic dye exports from Indonesia, with a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, basic dye exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Turkey (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Mexico (X tons), with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands totaled +9.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (-4.5% per year) and Mexico (-11.0% per year).

In value terms, Japan ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Turkey ($X) constituted the largest markets for basic dye exported from Indonesia worldwide, with a combined 80% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Japan, with a CAGR of +107.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average basic dye export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+37.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Indonesia

In 2021, overseas purchases of basic dyes and preparations based thereon increased by 1% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 35%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, basic dye imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of basic dye to Indonesia, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, basic dye imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), fivefold. Japan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India totaled +13.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-4.8% per year) and Japan (-5.5% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), India ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the largest basic dye suppliers to Indonesia, with a combined 88% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +7.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

The average basic dye import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 46% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight downturn. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+15.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
