Beer Market Size in Indonesia

The Indonesian beer market shrank to $X in 2022, falling by -7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a mild slump. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Beer Production in Indonesia

In value terms, beer production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 1,474% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Indonesia

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of beer, when their volume increased by 77% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, beer exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild reduction. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the main destinations of beer exports from Indonesia, with a combined 66% share of total exports. Singapore, South Korea, Timor-Leste and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Singapore (with a CAGR of +74.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Russia ($X) were the largest markets for beer exported from Indonesia worldwide, with a combined 64% share of total exports. Singapore, South Korea, Australia and Timor-Leste lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

Among the main countries of destination, Singapore, with a CAGR of +79.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average beer export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 29%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Indonesia

In 2022, the amount of beer imported into Indonesia dropped rapidly to X tons, waning by -22.2% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 187% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, beer imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 229% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mexico (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of beer to Indonesia, accounting for a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, beer imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), threefold. Singapore (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Mexico totaled +63.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+18.7% per year) and Singapore (-28.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest beer suppliers to Indonesia were Mexico ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Australia ($X), with a combined 77% share of total imports. Singapore, Belgium, the United States and New Zealand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

The United States, with a CAGR of +74.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average beer import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 117% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the price for Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
