Carob Market Size in Indonesia

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in the Indonesian carob market, when its value increased by 11% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, carob exports fell notably to $X in 2018. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 99.9% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) was the main destination for carob exports from Indonesia, with a 99.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Montenegro (X kg), with less than 0.1% share of total exports. Australia (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with less than 0.1% share.

From 2016 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China stood at -53.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Montenegro (-98.6% per year) and Australia (-98.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for carob exports from Indonesia, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Montenegro ($X), with less than 0.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Australia, with less than 0.1% share.

From 2016 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China totaled -25.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Montenegro (-97.2% per year) and Australia (-97.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2018, the average carob export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 63% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2018 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. Imports into Indonesia

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of carob increased by 17% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carob imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of carob to Indonesia, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, carob imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain stood at -15.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (0.0% per year) and Algeria (-7.6% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carob to Indonesia, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain stood at -14.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (0.0% per year) and Algeria (-6.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average carob import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -6.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the price for Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+1.0%).
