Cashew Nut Market Size in Indonesia

The Indonesian cashew nut market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. In general, consumption showed a measured expansion. Cashew nut consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Cashew Nut Production in Indonesia

In value terms, cashew nut production rose rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -32.8% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 30%. Cashew nut production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the average yield of cashew nuts in Indonesia amounted to X kg per ha, increasing by 3.8% on the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average cashew nut yield reached the maximum level at X kg per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of cashew nuts were harvested in Indonesia; declining by -2.8% compared with 2020 figures. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cashew nut production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Indonesia

In 2021, approx. X tons of cashew nuts were exported from Indonesia; falling by -30% against 2020. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 68%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut exports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 70% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Vietnam (X tons) was the main destination for cashew nut exports from Indonesia, with a 82% share of total exports. Moreover, cashew nut exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tons), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Vietnam totaled +9.6%.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the key foreign market for cashew nut exports from Indonesia, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Vietnam totaled +10.4%.

Export Prices by Country

The average cashew nut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+1.7%).

Cashew Nut Imports

Imports into Indonesia

In 2021, the amount of cashew nuts imported into Indonesia soared to X tons, picking up by 11,823% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cashew nut imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Benin (X tons) were the main suppliers of cashew nut imports to Indonesia, with a combined 85% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Senegal (with a CAGR of +47.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the largest cashew nut suppliers to Indonesia, with a combined 89% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Senegal, with a CAGR of +62.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

The average cashew nut import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -42.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while the price for Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+12.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
