Cassava Market Size in Indonesia

The Indonesian cassava market contracted to $X in 2022, waning by -5.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a slight decrease. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cassava Production in Indonesia

In value terms, cassava production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 106% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average yield of cassava in Indonesia reduced slightly to X tons per ha, approximately mirroring 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The cassava yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year. Exports from Indonesia

In 2022, overseas shipments of cassava decreased by -32.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a dramatic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 320% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava exports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a sharp descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 192%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) was the main destination for cassava exports from Indonesia, with a 77% share of total exports. Moreover, cassava exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vietnam (X tons), ninefold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to China totaled -25.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (-1.1% per year) and the United States (+2.8% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for cassava exports from Indonesia, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to China amounted to -27.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (-5.5% per year) and the United States (-8.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cassava export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -54.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 136%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+16.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Indonesia

Cassava imports into Indonesia contracted modestly to X tons in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 2,039%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 1,547% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Thailand (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cassava to Indonesia, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, cassava imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Thailand stood at +44.3%.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cassava to Indonesia, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 26% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Thailand stood at +35.1%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cassava import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam stood at $X per ton.
