For the third consecutive year, Indonesia recorded decline in overseas shipments of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades), which decreased by -44.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sulphite wood pulp exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Pakistan (X tons) was the main destination for sulphite wood pulp exports from Indonesia, accounting for a 91% share of total exports. Moreover, sulphite wood pulp exports to Pakistan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Pakistan stood at -2.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-23.5% per year) and Vietnam (-40.4% per year).
In value terms, Pakistan ($X) remains the key foreign market for chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) exports from Indonesia, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Pakistan stood at -3.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-23.4% per year) and Vietnam (-39.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average sulphite wood pulp export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -23.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Indonesia
After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) increased by 32% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 55%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sulphite wood pulp imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a resilient increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
