After five years of growth, the Indonesian chlorides market decreased by -1.9% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, recorded prominent growth. Chlorides consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, chlorides production shrank modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports from Indonesia

In 2021, exports of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) from Indonesia shrank notably to X tons, with a decrease of -17.3% against 2020. In general, exports, however, showed noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chlorides exports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -19.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 40%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main destinations of chlorides exports from Indonesia, together comprising 46% of total exports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Canada, New Zealand, Thailand, India, Vietnam, Hong Kong SAR, the Netherlands, South Korea and China, which together accounted for a further 48%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +130.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Singapore ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for chlorides exported from Indonesia worldwide, with a combined 32% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, India, New Zealand, Malaysia, Australia, the Netherlands, South Korea, Thailand, Canada and China, which together accounted for a further 60%.

South Korea, with a CAGR of +115.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average chlorides export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Indonesia

In 2021, chlorides imports into Indonesia skyrocketed to X tons, surging by 19% on 2020. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +47.4% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, chlorides imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest chlorides supplier to Indonesia, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, chlorides imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), more than tenfold. Singapore (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +8.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+13.1% per year) and Singapore (-5.9% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) to Indonesia, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +7.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+12.0% per year) and Japan (+2.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average chlorides import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight contraction. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
