The Indonesian green coffee market contracted modestly to $X in 2022, dropping by -3.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a mild increase. Exports from Indonesia
For the fourth year in a row, Indonesia recorded growth in overseas shipments of coffee (green), which increased by 5.8% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 31%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, green coffee exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of green coffee exports from Indonesia, together comprising 34% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +40.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for coffee (green) exports from Indonesia, comprising 24% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States totaled -1.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+11.8% per year) and Japan (-5.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average green coffee export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Green Coffee Imports
Imports into Indonesia
In 2022, overseas purchases of coffee (green) increased by 132% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 556% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, green coffee imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 438%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Vietnam (X tons), Timor-Leste (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main suppliers of green coffee imports to Indonesia, together accounting for 95% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Timor-Leste (with a CAGR of +27.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Brazil ($X) and Timor-Leste ($X) appeared to be the largest green coffee suppliers to Indonesia, together accounting for 93% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Timor-Leste, with a CAGR of +21.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average green coffee import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 30%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for Timor-Leste ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
