Exports from Indonesia
In 2021, composite paperboard exports from Indonesia surged to X tons, picking up by 16% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, composite paperboard exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 21%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) was the main destination for composite paperboard exports from Indonesia, with a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, composite paperboard exports to Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Saudi Arabia (X tons), more than tenfold. Ghana (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Taiwan (Chinese) totaled -32.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (-3.5% per year) and Ghana (+1.8% per year).
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) remains the key foreign market for composite paper and paperboard exports from Indonesia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Taiwan (Chinese) totaled -25.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+3.7% per year) and Japan (+1.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average composite paperboard export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sri Lanka (+10.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Composite Paperboard Imports
Imports into Indonesia
In 2021, the amount of composite paper and paperboard imported into Indonesia contracted remarkably to X tons, with a decrease of -16.8% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, composite paperboard imports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of composite paperboard imports to Indonesia, together comprising 76% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +41.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Thailand ($X), China ($X) and Malaysia ($X) were the largest composite paperboard suppliers to Indonesia, together comprising 62% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Thailand, with a CAGR of +38.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average composite paperboard import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -4.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 24%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
