In value terms, cotton (carded or combed) exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 99% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Vietnam (X tons) was the main destination for cotton (carded or combed) exports from Indonesia, accounting for a 64% share of total exports. Moreover, cotton (carded or combed) exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), fivefold. The Philippines (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Vietnam totaled +43.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+24.9% per year) and the Philippines (-1.9% per year).
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the key foreign market for cotton (carded or combed) exports from Indonesia, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Vietnam stood at +26.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (+70.9% per year) and the Philippines (+1.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average cotton (carded or combed) export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Indonesia
After five years of growth, purchases abroad of cotton (carded or combed) decreased by -0.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports showed a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 2,112%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cotton (carded or combed) imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 162% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In 2022, Japan (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cotton (carded or combed) to Indonesia, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, cotton (carded or combed) imports from Japan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by China (X tons), with a 0.3% share.
