Crane Market Size in Indonesia

In 2022, the Indonesian crane market increased by 86% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Crane exports from Indonesia shrank significantly to X units in 2022, waning by -18% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, crane exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X units), India (X units) and Malaysia (X units) were the main destinations of crane exports from Indonesia, together comprising 38% of total exports. The United States, Bangladesh, Mexico, the Netherlands, Thailand, Algeria, Hong Kong SAR, South Korea and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hong Kong SAR (with a CAGR of +40.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), India ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for crane exported from Indonesia worldwide, together accounting for 44% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Algeria, with a CAGR of +49.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average crane export price amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bangladesh (+17.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of derricks, cranes, mobile lifting frames, straddle carriers and work trucks fitted with a crane were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced descent. Imports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crane imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of crane to Indonesia, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, crane imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X units), fivefold. Singapore (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-5.4% per year) and Singapore (-12.4% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of derricks, cranes, mobile lifting frames, straddle carriers and work trucks fitted with a crane to Indonesia, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 6.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +5.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-12.0% per year) and Singapore (-16.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average crane import price amounted to $X per unit, surging by 42% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per unit), while the price for Japan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
