Imports into Indonesia
In 2021, supplies from abroad of fructose and fructose syrup increased by 4.7% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 47%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fructose imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +23.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 23%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fructose to Indonesia, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, fructose imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Malaysia (X tons), with an 8.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +11.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+107.6% per year) and Malaysia (+21.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fructose and fructose syrup to Indonesia, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +12.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+72.5% per year) and Malaysia (+21.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average fructose import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
