Garlic Market Size in Indonesia
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Indonesian garlic market, when its value decreased by -4% to $X. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 632% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, garlic exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 1,015%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) was the main destination for garlic exports from Indonesia, with a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, garlic exports to Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Timor-Leste (X tons), fourfold. Vietnam (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Taiwan (Chinese) amounted to +37.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Timor-Leste (-9.2% per year) and Vietnam (+0.5% per year).
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for garlic exports from Indonesia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Taiwan (Chinese) totaled +41.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+18.7% per year) and Vietnam (+4.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average garlic export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 102% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Timor-Leste ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+12.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Indonesia
In 2022, overseas purchases of garlic decreased by -1.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
In value terms, garlic imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) was the main garlic supplier to Indonesia, accounting for a approx. 99% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +3.8%.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to Indonesia.
