Ginger Market Size in Indonesia
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Indonesian ginger market, when its value decreased by -1.8% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. Ginger consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
Ginger Production in Indonesia
In value terms, ginger production rose markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a resilient expansion. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ginger exports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 998% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Malaysia (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main destinations of ginger exports from Indonesia, together accounting for 83% of total exports. Singapore, Germany and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.2%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +151.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for ginger exported from Indonesia were Bangladesh ($X), India ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 53% share of total exports. Japan, Germany and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Germany, with a CAGR of +155.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average ginger export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 99% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+15.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Ginger Imports
Imports into Indonesia
In 2022, supplies from abroad of ginger increased by 19% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 2,256%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ginger imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 1,920% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Thailand (X tons), India (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main suppliers of ginger imports to Indonesia, with a combined 77% share of total imports. China, Myanmar, Nigeria and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +61.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest ginger suppliers to Indonesia were India ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Thailand, with a CAGR of +24.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
