In 2022, the Indonesian gym and fitness equipment market decreased by -4.4% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, posted strong growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, gym and fitness equipment exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 256% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for gym and fitness equipment exports from Indonesia, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, gym and fitness equipment exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Timor-Leste (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Singapore (X tons), with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States totaled +3.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Timor-Leste (+7.3% per year) and Singapore (+18.9% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for gym and fitness equipment exports from Indonesia, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States totaled -2.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+33.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-6.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average gym and fitness equipment export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 198% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Timor-Leste ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+12.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Indonesia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of gym and fitness equipment decreased by -4.9% to X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, gym and fitness equipment imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 31%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2022, China (X tons) was the main supplier of gym and fitness equipment to Indonesia, with a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), with a 0.9% share of total imports.
