Canned Meat Market Size in Indonesia

After three years of decline, the Indonesian canned meat market increased by 4.1% to $X in 2021. Overall, the total consumption indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine years. For the fifth consecutive year, Indonesia recorded growth in shipments abroad of canned meat, which increased by 17% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 349% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, canned meat exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 763% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Hong Kong SAR (X tons) was the main destination for canned meat exports from Indonesia, accounting for a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, canned meat exports to Hong Kong SAR exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Papua New Guinea (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Japan (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hong Kong SAR amounted to +134.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Papua New Guinea (+40.4% per year) and Japan (+110.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for canned meat exported from Indonesia were Hong Kong SAR ($X), Papua New Guinea ($X) and Timor-Leste ($X), with a combined 68% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, Taiwan (Chinese) and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 27%.

Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +156.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average canned meat export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 194%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Papua New Guinea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+44.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Canned Meat Imports

Imports into Indonesia

In 2021, approx. X tons of canned meat were imported into Indonesia; with a decrease of -5.2% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 77%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, canned meat imports expanded to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 56%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Australia (X tons) constituted the largest canned meat supplier to Indonesia, with a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, canned meat imports from Australia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Australia stood at +10.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+10.8% per year) and the United States (+27.6% per year).

In value terms, Australia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of canned meat to Indonesia, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 1.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Australia amounted to +13.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+24.0% per year) and the United States (+26.9% per year).

In 2021, the average canned meat import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
