In 2022, the Indonesian lactose market increased by 1.2% to $X, rising for the seventh consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports from Indonesia
After five years of growth, overseas shipments of lactose and lactose syrup decreased by -93.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 50%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lactose exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a precipitous contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 75%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Malaysia (X tons) was the main destination for lactose exports from Indonesia, accounting for a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, lactose exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X tons), fourfold. Brazil (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Malaysia stood at +52.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-9.3% per year) and Brazil (-0.4% per year).
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the key foreign market for lactose and lactose syrup exports from Indonesia, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Malaysia amounted to +16.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-10.2% per year) and Brazil (-2.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average lactose export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+10.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Lactose Imports
Imports into Indonesia
In 2022, purchases abroad of lactose and lactose syrup decreased by -1.7% to X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
In value terms, lactose imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The United States (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of lactose imports to Indonesia, together comprising 69% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +307.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Denmark ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the largest lactose suppliers to Indonesia, together accounting for 70% of total imports.
Denmark, with a CAGR of +287.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average lactose import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
