Mdf Market Size in Indonesia
In 2021, the Indonesian MDF market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Mdf Production in Indonesia
In value terms, MDF production expanded markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -10.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 38%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Indonesia
After three years of growth, overseas shipments of MDF decreased by -17.4% to X cubic meters in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 70%. The exports peaked at X cubic meters in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, MDF exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +28.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 66%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Egypt (X cubic meters), Iran (X cubic meters) and Japan (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of MDF exports from Indonesia, with a combined 54% share of total exports. Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Jordan, Vietnam, Taiwan (Chinese), India, the United States, Malaysia and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of +78.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X), Japan ($X) and Iran ($X) were the largest markets for MDF exported from Indonesia worldwide, with a combined 57% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Jordan, Vietnam, Taiwan (Chinese), the United States, Malaysia, India and Lebanon, which together accounted for a further 36%.
Among the main countries of destination, Iraq, with a CAGR of +84.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average MDF export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, surging by 22% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight setback. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to India ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Mdf Imports
Imports into Indonesia
After three years of decline, overseas purchases of MDF increased by 45% to X cubic meters in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, MDF imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a slight reduction. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
New Zealand (X cubic meters), Malaysia (X cubic meters) and Thailand (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of MDF imports to Indonesia, together accounting for 77% of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, China, Belgium, India, Australia and Brazil, which together accounted for a further 20%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +83.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, New Zealand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of MDF to Indonesia, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from New Zealand totaled +1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (-8.1% per year) and Thailand (+1.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average MDF import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, picking up by 7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per cubic meter), while the price for India ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
