Melon Market Size in Indonesia

The Indonesian melon market contracted to $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a perceptible decrease. Melon consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Melon Production in Indonesia

In value terms, melon production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of melons in Indonesia shrank modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -1.9% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The melon yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. In 2022, the amount of melons exported from Indonesia totaled X tons, surging by 2.4% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 286%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a dramatic setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 189%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Timor-Leste (X tons) were the main destinations of melon exports from Indonesia, together comprising 77% of total exports. Bahrain, Brunei Darussalam, Saudi Arabia, Japan and Hong Kong SAR lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +37.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the key foreign market for melons exports from Indonesia, comprising 29% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brunei Darussalam ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Singapore amounted to -27.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brunei Darussalam (-26.1% per year) and Malaysia (-7.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average melon export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -2.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 57% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Indonesia

In 2022, overseas purchases of melons decreased by -25.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports recorded a precipitous contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 169% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports faced a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 185% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of melon to Indonesia, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, melon imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X tons), eightfold. Malaysia (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Vietnam stood at -16.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (-23.6% per year) and Malaysia (-46.7% per year).

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constituted the largest supplier of melons to Indonesia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Singapore was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (-15.3% per year) and Australia (-25.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average melon import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
