In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Indonesian motorcycle and bicycle market, when its value decreased by -8% to $X. Overall, the total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, shipments abroad of motorcycles and bicycles increased by 14% to X units, rising for the seventh consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports showed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 51%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, motorcycle and bicycle exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 143%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

The UK (X units), the United States (X units) and the Philippines (X units) were the main destinations of motorcycle and bicycle exports from Indonesia, together accounting for 57% of total exports. These countries were followed by Denmark, Sweden, Vietnam, Canada, Germany, Australia, the Netherlands, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +54.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) remains the key foreign market for motorcycles and bicycles exports from Indonesia, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Philippines stood at +24.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+103.3% per year) and Thailand (+22.3% per year).

The average motorcycle and bicycle export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 7.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 96%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports into Indonesia

In 2021, overseas purchases of motorcycles and bicycles decreased by -6.4% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 210% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, motorcycle and bicycle imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 58%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) was the main supplier of motorcycle and bicycle to Indonesia, with a 153% share of total imports. Moreover, motorcycle and bicycle imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X units), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -10.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+1.8% per year) and Thailand (-36.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Thailand ($X) appeared to be the largest motorcycle and bicycle suppliers to Indonesia, together accounting for 87% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +17.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2021, the average motorcycle and bicycle import price amounted to $X per unit, rising by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 42%.
