The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 313% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, newspaper exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 366%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Malaysia (X units) was the main destination for newspaper exports from Indonesia, accounting for a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, newspaper exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X units), fourfold. South Korea (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Malaysia amounted to +21.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-0.5% per year) and South Korea (+67.6% per year).
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the key foreign market for newspapers, journals and periodicals exports from Indonesia, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Malaysia stood at +14.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-3.5% per year) and the United States (+3.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average newspaper export price amounted to $X per unit, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Timor-Leste (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+22.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Indonesia
In 2022, newspaper imports into Indonesia soared to X units, increasing by 121% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 339% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, newspaper imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 416% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Korea (X units) constituted the largest newspaper supplier to Indonesia, with a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, newspaper imports from South Korea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X units), ninefold. The United States (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from South Korea stood at +166.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+24.1% per year) and the United States (+48.2% per year).
In value terms, South Korea ($X) constituted the largest supplier of newspapers, journals and periodicals to Indonesia, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from South Korea amounted to +105.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+26.0% per year) and the UK (+35.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average newspaper import price stood at less than $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -25.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 68%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while the price for Malaysia (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (-13.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
