Packaging Materials Market Size in Indonesia
In 2022, the Indonesian packaging materials market increased by 10% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of packaging materials decreased by -28.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 112% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, packaging materials exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for packaging materials exports from Indonesia, accounting for a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, packaging materials exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malaysia (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Vietnam (X tons), with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to China totaled +42.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+6.4% per year) and Vietnam (-2.7% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for packaging materials exports from Indonesia, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 9.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China amounted to +39.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+10.4% per year) and Vietnam (+1.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average packaging materials export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 41% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Packaging Materials Imports
Imports into Indonesia
In 2022, the amount of packaging materials imported into Indonesia skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 44% compared with 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +55.8% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, packaging materials imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +71.1% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
South Korea (X tons), China (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main suppliers of packaging materials imports to Indonesia, together comprising 38% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +39.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Singapore ($X) and South Korea ($X) appeared to be the largest packaging materials suppliers to Indonesia, with a combined 39% share of total imports. Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, Russia, the United States, Malaysia, Taiwan (Chinese), Sweden and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
Among the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +37.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average packaging materials import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 14%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
