Photographic Film Market Size in Indonesia

In 2021, the Indonesian photographic film market increased by 43% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a pronounced setback. Photographic film consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Photographic film exports from Indonesia soared to X square meters in 2021, rising by 37% compared with 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 174% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X square meters in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, photographic film exports fell significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 253% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X square meters), Timor-Leste (X square meters) and Malaysia (X square meters) were the main destinations of photographic film exports from Indonesia, with a combined 85% share of total exports. The United States, Myanmar, Hong Kong SAR and Papua New Guinea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +63.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the key foreign market for photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed exports from Indonesia, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 7% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Singapore totaled +1.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+20.0% per year) and the United States (+61.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average photographic film export price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, with a decrease of -69.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 273% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Timor-Leste ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Papua New Guinea (+29.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Indonesia

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed, when their volume increased by 45% to X square meters. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. Imports peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, photographic film imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable reduction. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X square meters) constituted the largest supplier of photographic film to Indonesia, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, photographic film imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X square meters), threefold. Japan (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to -2.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-3.8% per year) and Japan (-6.8% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), the United States ($X) and Japan ($X) were the largest photographic film suppliers to Indonesia, together accounting for 86% of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Hong Kong SAR and the UK, which together accounted for a further 8.8%.

Among the main suppliers, Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +14.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average photographic film import price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, with a decrease of -1.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per square meter), while the price for Hong Kong SAR ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
