Lime Market Size in Indonesia
In 2021, the Indonesian lime market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Lime consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Lime Production in Indonesia
In value terms, lime production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 15%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
Lime Exports
Exports from Indonesia
Lime exports from Indonesia contracted to X tons in 2021, waning by -8.2% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 216%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lime exports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 292%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Philippines (X tons) was the main destination for lime exports from Indonesia, with a 96% share of total exports. Moreover, lime exports to the Philippines exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Papua New Guinea (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Philippines amounted to +15.8%.
In value terms, the Philippines ($X) remains the key foreign market for quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime exports from Indonesia, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Papua New Guinea ($X), with a 4.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the Philippines stood at +15.9%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average lime export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Papua New Guinea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lime Imports
Imports into Indonesia
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime increased by 7.9% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lime imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 44%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) constituted the largest lime supplier to Indonesia, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, lime imports from Malaysia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), twofold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Malaysia amounted to +19.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+16.5% per year) and China (+84.6% per year).
In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Thailand ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest lime suppliers to Indonesia, together comprising 82% of total imports. Oman, Vietnam and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
Oman, with a CAGR of +991.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average lime import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
